This morning I had a rough start. To give you context, it was a Monday and I had slept late on Sunday and yes, you can guess it, my house was a mess. This got me thinking of easy ways or habits which i have i have used in the past to ensure that I have a good day. Yes, I am well aware that there are things that may happen which may not be in your control, but the things which you have control over… control.

Closing the kitchen

I am not sure where I heard this term but I love it. Closing the kitchen means after the last meal of the day you clean the kitchen and try to discourage yourself and family members to snack or cook or whatever it is that happens in your kitchen. Apart form cultivating healthy eating habits, through going to bed with a clean kitchen, you will start the day with no dirty dishes.

Nothing can dampen the mood than waking up to chores from last night. As you are dealing with last night’s dishes, breakfast bowls are already piling up. Please, if you can, close the kitchen for the night.

Plan your meals

I will say this, when I first got married I would just cook whatever and before I knew it, I was burnt out from thinking about what to it. Having an idea or a semi set weekly menu will help you keep things fresh and interesting plus you will cook fresh produce before it spoils.

Perhaps its just me, evening meal times can easily add to the mental load. “What are we eating for dinner”. So, if you can, why not remove one more decision from your plate.

Exercise first thing in the morning

This could just be me but if I do not get my exercise in early morning before I tackle anything, it never gets done. Recently I have been trying to close my rings and that essentially means reaching 10 000 steps – walking for 75 minutes. As I have a desk job, you will be surprised that some days I am lucky to hit 2000 steps unless I do at least 45 minutes of walking early morning before tackling the day. I will not go into the benefits of exercing. If you have not done this, try it for a week and come back and report the results.

Watch your screen time

Social media is my downfall. This is especially when it comes to Tiktok. I have often said I do not have time for hobbies, catching up with family and friends. If anything, I felt as though I was drowning as I did not have time to do anything. Then, I take a look at my phone and I see that I have 5 hours screen time recorded.

Create more time for the things you love by making sure that you are not spending all your free moments on your phone. Note that I am not saying that remove social media from your life, but rather, limit your time on your socials. Personally, I use the feature on that is available on tiktok. It lets me know if I have been scrolling none stop for 20 minutes. After hitting the 1 hour mark on the platform for the day, it kicks me out and I have to use a password if I insist to go past an hour.
